I like Christmas atmosphere in each and every city and town. It brings something festive and happy to everyday life and gives us a chance to admire our city in a new look. I’ve spent my childhood in Bratislava and until last year my favourite (and I would swear that most beautiful) Christmas markets were there. But last year, Brno made me to change my mind. When I’ve moved to Brno some years ago, Christmas markets hadn’t been very nice – there was sold everything and anything in ugly stands and there hasn’t been any programme accompanying the event. However, some time ago, the city decided to upgrade Christmas markets and choose carefully who is allowed to rent a stand there and also it divided the event into 3 squares. Overall I think this helped and this year, we can be looking forward to a very nice event. On Moravske square there are Christmas markets for children with the carousels and skate ring. On Zelny square there are traditional markets, where you can buy some nice pieces of handicraft (e.g. pottery, things made of wood, etc.). and the main Christmas markets are traditionally on Svobody square – mostly focused on foods and drinks, but also having huge and beautiful Bethlehem and stage with accompanying programme. Every day I’m crossing Liberty square on my way from work and I’m watching carefully the preparations. It seems, this year, there will be possible to buy there spices from all around the world, Hungarian specialties, French cheese, but also typical Czech foods and drinks – including melt wine, grog and hot chocolate. Yesterday, the decorations of the Christmas tree begun, so I suppose everything will be ready for a big opening on Friday! So, if you will be devastated from Christmas shopping and in a need for rest – go to Namesti Svobody and have a nice cup of hot chocolate. And I’m sure you will meet some friends there.
