St. Martin’s day (which is 11th of November) is connected to one of my favourite traditions in Czech republic. It’s considered as unofficial start of the winter time (there is proverb saying that St. Martin is arriving on a white horse, meaning, you can expect the first snow on this day). This also means that you should prepare your body for the tough winter time and full the tummy with something good, warm and fat, which means a goose ;-) Baked goose with cabbage and dumplings is the typical menu of the day and you can find it as a lunch menu in most of the restaurants. But besides all of this, there is one more tradition connected to this day and that’s arrival of a new wine. St. Martin’s day is the first day when you can buy a wine produced that year and have a first guesses what was the wine harvest like that year. In the biggest cities on the main squares there are wine tastings organized by many wine producing cellars and companies (in Prague on Staromestsky square and in Brno on Namesti Svobody). And luckily, this year is the St. Martins day tomorrow - on Friday, which only adds to merry atmosphere. So why not going out tomorrow, have a nice goose accompanied by a new wine? Enjoy!
