Short explanation for those of you who have never heard the words ‘summer cinema’ before – basically it’s open air cinema that start usually very late (so it’s dark outside). Movies are usually not the latest blockbusters, but either movies from the last year or something from the golden fond of cinematography. In Brno there are several of them. I would say the most popular is in the area of swimming pool Dobrak (http://www.nadobraku.cz/). The advantage is that most of the movies are in English with Czech subtitles so even if your Czech is not perfect, you can enjoy the movie. Lately I’ve seen that there will be summer cinema also in the garden of restaurant Hansen which is great, because you can have nice dinner before the movie. Also the next movie that will be broadcasted is one of my favourite Czech movies called Pelisky (this is difficult to translate – it means a shelter, place where you can hide and you feel warm and safe). It will be in Czech but with English subtitles. I would really recommend it – I think it’s great illustration of Czech culture and sense of humour. The plot of the movie is about daily problems of a few families in 1968, how they lived and how they dealt with Russian invasion. But it’s not a historical movie, more like bitter sweet comedy which is quite typical for Czech movies. You can see staring in it one of the best Czech actors and hear great music. So if you are decided to give a try to summer cinema - a bit of good advice so you can really enjoy it: despite hot weather during the day, night is quite cold (especially if you are just sitting), so take enough of warm clothes and ideally even blanket (seats can be cold). And do not count that you will arrive home before midnight! Enjoy!
